HATE CRIME

(Updated 04/04/2023)

A Hate Crime or incident are any crimes or incidents where the victim, or any other person, believes it was carried out because of the victims’ identity. This could be Disability; Faith, Religion or Belief; Gender Identity; Race, Ethnicity and Nationality; or Sexual Orientation. If you’ve experienced an act of violence or hostility because of who you are or someone thinks you are, you may have been the victim of a hate crime or hate incident.

Citizens Advice IW is a Third party reporting Centre in relation to Hate Crime. A Third party reporting centre is a place (which is not a police station) where clients can report hate crime and incidents. We can support the client with making a referral to the Police or support them to make an online referral.  The report can be given in confidence and the details of the report will only contain the victim’s personal details with their consent when passed to the police.

Reporting a hate crime or hate incident to the police - Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice have been running a project since January 2019 funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to raise awareness of what Hate Crime is and how to report it.  We have delivered formal training to community groups including staff, volunteers and service users as well as raising awareness within the general public. We have also trained our own volunteers so that they know how to support a client who wishes to report a Hate Crime or incident.
